Recently Encountered Scenario: Customer sent an invite from the Lifesize Cloud application for an external participant to join a call

  • The external participant receives the email with links
  • Participant clicks on link to join call via "Skype for Business"
    • When using Internet Explorer version 11 the External Protocol Request incorrectly initiates opening the external participants' Cisco Jabber Browser
    • When when the external participant uses the Firefox browser the External Protocol Request correctly initiates opening the participants' Skype for Business Client

Question: What needs to be changed in order to influence the behavior of Internet Explorer (IE) 11 to cause it to correctly open Skype for Business?

Answer/Explanation: The protocol handler for IE 11 is defined at the operating system level. The resolution for this situation was to go into the Windows Registry and go to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\sip\shell\open\command

Then click on "Default" to the right and change CiscoJabber.exe to lync.exe and it would open Skype for business instead of Cisco Jabber.
