Detailed instructions for connecting and controlling a 3rd-party camera from an Icon 600/800

Hello again everyone! This is the latest in my unofficial series titled "using third party stuff successfully with LifeSize" - today we'll talk about a scenario where you'd want to use a third-party camera (like a Vaddio but these instructions will generally apply to any camera running the Sony VISCA protocols) directly with an Icon 600 or Icon 800 BUT without an AMX or Crestron Control system.

 

The biggest advantages here to this setup are simplicity: You can still control the camera through the HD Phone or the remote, AND Far End Camera Control (FECC) still works!!

Ok, enough talk, here we go.

Using a Vaddio HDMI camera with a LifeSize Icon

Parts list:

  • LifeSize Icon 600 or 800
  • USB-Serial Adapter (we used a Tripp Lite USA-19H but others also work)
  • Vaddio RoboSHOT 12 or RoboSHOT 30 HDMI
  • Vaddio RJ-45 female to DB9 adapter
  • HDMI Cable
  • Shielded CAT6 or CAT7 cable

 

  1. Connect the Camera RJ-45 RS-232 port using the shielded CAT6 or CAT7 to the Vaddio RJ-45 to DB9 adapter from Vaddio.
  2. Connect the Vaddio adapter to the USB-Serial adapter (Tripp lite used for example) directly, no null modem adapter is required. If you need a longer run use a longer CAT cable.
  3. On the camera itself, make sure the speed is set to 9600 or 38400- (check the dip switch) both speeds will work just need to match the speed of camera with the setting on the Icon (we typically use 9600).
  4. On the Icon 600/800, navigate to the web interface preferences, then to USB 1 or 2 (and pick the same port you are going to plug the USB-serial into) and set it as follows. Match the speed to the setting for the camera above.

 

If it is correct, then you can either test with camera control through the HD phone or the remote, OR you can go to Diagnostics/System information and scroll down to “HD Camera” if it's correctly connected it will look like this:

 

IF for any reason it doesn't just work, do the following steps:

  • Reboot the codec and camera
  • Double check your DIP switch and speed settings to ensure they match.
  • Check "Layer One" connections- the #1 thing that screws you up is the shielded CAT cable!!! If you don't have one it doesn't work.

 

Once you have done the above, the camera will behave exactly like a connected LifeSize Camera would, including Far End Camera Control (FECC)

 

We've done the same thing with Sony, ClearOne and other Visca cameras, it works just great.
